Get out from under it. Watch from the doorway. A ceiling that is bulging, sagging, or dripping from several points at once is carrying water it was never built to carry, and it fails suddenly rather than gradually. A sagging ceiling is a weight problem before it is a water problem.
Electricity. Ceilings are full of it: light fixtures, fans, junction boxes, and the wiring running between joists. Water tracks along that wiring. Do not touch a light switch or a fixture in the affected room. If your breaker panel is dry and you can reach it without walking through water, shut off power to that area. If you cannot reach it dry, leave it and call an electrician or your utility.
Move what you can, from the edges. Furniture and electronics at the perimeter of the room, yes. Anything directly beneath the sag, no. Leave it. Replace it later.
Call 911 and leave if you smell gas, if water is reaching outlets or a live panel, or if the ceiling is actively coming down.
Why ceilings fail all at once
Water weighs about 8.34 pounds per US gallon. A bulge holding five gallons is hanging more than forty pounds off the drywall, plus the weight of the soaked drywall itself, and five gallons is a smaller bulge than most people picture when they hear the number. Ceiling drywall is designed to hold up its own weight and nothing else. It is fastened at the joists, and it is the fasteners and the saturated paper facing that give way — not the middle of the sheet.
That is the reason a ceiling looks fine for hours and then comes down in one piece. There is no progressive sagging to warn you. The load sits on the fasteners until they let go, and because they are carrying it together they tend to release together, so what you get is not a sheet that slowly droops over an afternoon but a sheet that is up, and then is on your dining table.
The practical version of this. A water stain on the ceiling is a problem to investigate. A bulge is a problem to stand back from. A brown ring that is dry to the touch means water passed through at some point, and the job is working out when and from where, because a stain that dried once will get wet again the next time whatever caused it happens. A soft, heavy, or visibly drooping area means water is in there right now.
Draining a bulge on purpose
If a bulge is going to release, it is safer for it to release into a bucket at a time you choose than onto the floor at a time it chooses. Controlled draining is a normal thing for a homeowner to do, but only when all of the following are true.
- The power to that area is off, and you confirmed it from a dry standing position.
- Nobody is underneath, and you are not underneath either. You work from the side, at arm's length.
- The ceiling is drywall, not plaster or heavily textured. Older plaster comes down in slabs.
- The bulge is small enough that a bucket will hold it.
Put a bucket down, stand to the side, and make one small hole at the lowest point of the bulge with a screwdriver on an extension. One hole, at the low point. That part matters: puncture the middle instead and the water runs along the back of the drywall and finds its own exit somewhere you are not standing.
If the bulge is large, if the ceiling is plaster, if you cannot confirm the power is off, or if you would have to stand under it to reach it, stop. Close the door and wait. A restoration crew arriving to a ceiling that is still up has an easier job than one arriving to a ceiling that came down on the furniture.
Finding where the water is coming from
In Florida the answer is usually air conditioning, not the roof. A residential system pulls twenty to fifty gallons of water a day out of the air, and that water leaves through a condensate drain line that grows algae in exactly the warm, wet, dark conditions Florida provides. When the line clogs, the drain pan overflows. Because air handlers in Florida sit up on a platform in the attic or tucked into a hall closet, the first thing anyone notices is a stain on the ceiling below, several feet from anything that looks like plumbing. The distinction that matters most for what happens next is not where the water came from but what was in it. The IICRC S500 standard sorts water into three categories: category 1 is clean water from a supply line, category 2 carries contaminants, and category 3 is grossly contaminated, meaning sewage or water that has sat long enough to grow its own biology. Category 3 materials are removed, not dried. That is not a judgement call a homeowner should be making from the top of a ladder.
The 24 to 48 hour clock
The EPA's guidance is that materials dried within 24 to 48 hours will in most cases not grow mold, and that all wet areas should be dried within 48 hours. That is a guideline rather than a guarantee. A sealed ceiling cavity in a Florida August is a far more welcoming environment for mold than a plaster wall in a dry climate, so the same 48 hours does not buy you the same margin. It is still the clock everyone in the industry works to. It is why the response to a wet ceiling is measured in hours.
Ceilings are worse than walls in this respect for one reason: the insulation. Batt or blown insulation sitting on top of ceiling drywall soaks up water, holds it against the board, and blocks the airflow that would otherwise dry it. A ceiling can look dry from below while the cavity above it stays wet for a week.

Dried or replaced
Drywall that was wet briefly with clean water, and got airflow quickly, can often be dried in place. Drywall that stayed wet, that swelled, that lost its rigidity, or that was hit with contaminated water gets cut out. Insulation above it almost always comes out either way, because it holds water and stops the cavity from drying.
The practical marker crews use is whether the material still holds its shape and its strength. Drywall that has gone soft has lost the gypsum core's structure and will not recover, whatever a moisture meter says afterwards. One thing worth raising early on a Florida repair: most ceilings here are knockdown or orange-peel texture, and matching that texture across a patch is its own small trade, so a repair that is structurally perfect can still read as a repair from the doorway in the right light.
One Florida-specific thing to know before anyone quotes you on mold: under Chapter 468, Part XVI of the Florida Statutes, mold-related services on more than 10 square feet require a licensed Mold Assessor or Mold Remediator, and §468.8419 bars the same firm from both assessing and remediating the same structure within a 12-month period. If one company offers to test your ceiling and then fix what it found, that is the thing the statute was written to prevent. We go through what to check in choosing a restoration company.
What ceiling water damage costs
Restoration in Florida is generally priced per square foot of affected area and by water category, running roughly $3–$4 per square foot for clean water, $4–$7 for category 2, and around $7–$7.50 for category 3, with a typical whole-job total in the $1,300–$5,600 range. A ceiling alone usually sits at the lower end unless the water got into the cavity and travelled, which it frequently does.
